The production potential of the Gash Barka region has caused it to be considered the bread basket of Eritrea.

In the case of this region ground level and underground water sources help to water the hectares of fertile-rich soil which are treated with natural fertilizers and pesticides.

Community members pay their respects at an impromptu memorial at Monroe Park where 18 year old High School graduate Shawn Jackson and his father, 36 year old Renzo Smith were gunned down following the graduation ceremony for Huguenot High School on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 in Richmond Virginia. The family had just attended the graduation ceremony at the Altria Theater across the street from the park when they and 5 others were shot when shooting erupted in the crowded park. Four adults and a 14 year-old survived the shooting with one of the adults still in the hospital with life threatening injuries. A 19 year old suspect is currently in custody following the shootings.
